Since I have a love for all things sweet, I decided a couple of months ago to set myself a new mission. I already knew that Rome is a fantastic city for those with dietary restrictions because there are plenty of great gluten and lactose free bakeries, but I was curious to see if the same held true for vegan bakeries.

I am happy to report that it does! There is a common belief that vegan pastries are not as delicious as traditional ones, but these bakeries will prove that notion wrong. In this blog post, I will share my top three vegan bakeries in Rome along with a few honourable mentions. Whether you are planning a trip to Rome or already live here, these spots are a must visit even if you are not vegan!

1.       Radagast Vegan Bakery

Delicious no-bake Lotus cheesecake from Radagast Vegan Bakery in Rome—one of the best vegan desserts in the city.

Let’s start with my absolute favourite vegan bakery in Rome—Radagast Vegan Bakery! Located on Via Teano, this must-visit spot is a dream come true for anyone with a sweet tooth.

From the moment you step inside, Radagast gives off great vibes. Though it's not very big, the space feels cozy and welcoming, like a little café. There are multiple tables where you can sit, along with a comfy couch, making it a perfect place to relax. Each table even has a small game, my friend and I played Four in a Row for a while during our visit, which added to the fun.

Now, onto the most important part—the food! We only ordered sweets, and I went a little overboard simply because I couldn’t choose. The no-bake vegan Lotus cheesecake was incredible, and their vegan cinnamon rolls were just as amazing! They offer both a classic and a lemon-flavored cinnamon roll, and honestly, both were delicious. They even warm them up for you, making them absolutely mouthwatering.

The staff at Radagast is incredibly kind, and they had no problem with us speaking English. While we were there, several people came in to pick up whole cakes, so you can also order vegan birthday cakes or other special treats in advance.

Beyond sweets, they also have a fast-food-style menu with burgers, bagels, and sandwiches, as well as delicious drinks. They offer a whole list of plant-based milk options—we went for a matcha with coconut milk, which was amazing.

The only downside to this place is its location. Since it's on Via Teano, along the Metro C line, it’s a bit far from the city centre. However, it's close to the amazing Pigneto neighbourhood (which I’ve written a guide about!), so you could easily combine a visit to both.

Overall, I highly recommend Radagast Vegan Bakery, it's more than worth the trip!

2.       Julietta Pastry and Lab

A stunning showcase of artisanal vegan pastries at Julietta Pastry and Lab in Rome, featuring elegant croissants, cheesecakes, and plant-based desserts.

Number two on my list is Julietta Pastry and Lab. No, I don’t only love this place just because of the name, Julietta Pastry and Lab truly deserves all the hype it gets.

Located in the cool neighbourhood of Ostiense, it’s a must-visit in my opinion. Their pastries aren’t just incredible; they’re like works of art. When I say their pastries are almost too pretty to eat, I mean it!

Funny enough, during my visit, I also ordered the vegan Lotus cheesecake (I’m obsessed with Lotus, okay?)—and it did not disappoint. I’ll definitely need to go back to try one of their giant croissants, though I might need backup for that one!

In addition to pastries, you can also order coffee at Julietta’s, and they have a shop section selling items like jams, vegan cheeses, kimchi, and other delicious treats. Unlike Radagast, which has more of a café vibe, Julietta’s feels more like a takeout spot. There are just one or two seats available, and there’s no restroom, so keep that in mind when planning your visit!

I highly recommend checking it out if you’re in Ostiense. Just remember, they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so you won’t end up in front of a locked door.

3.       Brothers Piermattei Srl

Last but definitely not least is Brothers Piermattei Srl. While both Radagast and Julietta’s have a bit more of a trendy vibe, Brothers Piermattei is truly an authentic Italian bakery—just vegan, of course. They offer vegan versions of traditional Italian pastries, and they’re also more affordable than the other two bakeries on this list.

I highly recommend this place if you're looking for an authentic Italian experience. It’s mostly locals here, and the interior feels just like a classic Italian pasticceria. I’ve had their vegan cornetto and some other amazing pastries, and I can definitely vouch for how good they are.

While Brothers Piermattei happens to be really close to my house, the location might not be super convenient for tourists. But if you can make the time to visit, it’s not hard to find, it’s near the S. Maria del Soccorso metro station on Line B, just a bit farther from the centre.

The only downside I’d mention is their opening hours. They open super early (5:30 AM), but they close at 13:30, so plan accordingly if you want to visit. It’s absolutely worth it though!

Honourable Mentions

Julietta Pastry and Lab

While putting together this list of my favourite vegan bakeries, I realized that none of them are located right in the city centre. I mean, each of their locations has something special—whether it’s being close to Pigneto, Ostiense, or... me, lol. But if you're only in Rome for a couple of days, you might miss them! So, I thought I’d give two honourable mentions in the city centre. They’re not exactly bakeries, but they do have vegan cakes—and, well, that’s all that matters, right?

The first honourable mention is Buddy Vegan Restaurant Café, located near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It’s a fully vegan restaurant with amazing dessert and sweets options!

The second honourable mention is Vivi, near Piazza Venezia. It’s more of a chain restaurant vibe, and not fully vegan. But they offer fantastic options for people with allergies and, of course, have some great vegan choices. Their vegan chocolate cake is showstopping, spectacular! (You can finish the rest!)

I hope that by writing this article and sharing these pictures of beautifully crafted pastries and sweets, I’ve inspired you to visit these amazing vegan bakeries in Rome! Each of them is a small business that pours so much effort and love into their craft, and it really shows in the taste. Whether you’re vegan, lactose intolerant, or just a lover of great food—these places are so good, and trust me, you’ll love them!

If I missed your favourite vegan bakery, I’d love to hear from you! I’m always on the lookout to try new spots and foods.
